The American Indian Ritual Object Repatriation Foundation and the Association on American Indian Affairs (AAIA) have forged a new relationship that will advance their efforts to promote the repatriation of cultural and sacred items to Native Americans, according to a joint announcement by Repatriation President and Founder, Dr. Elizabeth A. Sackler, and AAIA Executive Director, Jack Trope, Esq. The New York City-based Repatriation Foundation was created in 1992 to assist in the return of ritual material from the private sector to American Indians. "The Repatriation Foundation focuses on the distinction between art objects appropriate for sale and ceremonial items belonging to living cultures. We encourage private collectors, art dealers, and auction houses to repatriate ceremonial items in their possession," said Dr. Sackler. "The Repatriation Foundation is an intercultural organization that has also worked to promote the proper implementation of the 1990 Native American Graves Protection Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). AAIA is an advocacy organization with a national membership and scope. This new relationship will allow us to take our repatriation efforts to another level." This joint project is known as the American Indian Ritual Object Repatriation Foundation Project of the Association on American Indian Affairs. It uses the standards and procedures for repatriation from the private sector that have been developed over the past ten years. "We are very pleased with the potential of this new relationship," said Mr. Trope. "By combining the Repatriation Foundation's experience in facilitating the return of ceremonial objects with AAIA's long-standing cultural preservation initiatives, we are building on the strengths of both organizations."
